Lalumwe pioneers strategic partnership with Israeli hospital, Shamir Medical Center, to introduce a comprehensive ultrasound program to enhance maternal examinations in Zimbabwe and Zambia.
[Miami, FL., 01/24/24] — Lalumwe, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to lifting rural Africa out of poverty, announced today the launch of the Lalumwe Community Ultrasound Program, which will benefit communities in Rural Zimbabwe and Zambia.
This groundbreaking initiative aims to provide much-needed ultrasound equipment and continuing education for providers in Africa by connecting them with the maternal health residency at Shamir Medical Center. The program will initially focus on maternal examinations at clinics in resource-constrained areas.
“This exciting program brings together a number of individuals from different parts of the world with a focus on the mothers who need better maternity care,” says Dr. Michael Estreicher, co-founder of Lalumwe. “Improving overall community well-being is our goal, and everyone is on board to make it happen.”

A comprehensive site visit is scheduled for May 2024, during which Lalumwe will engage with key stakeholders, assess the feasibility of the proposed site, and determine the viability of establishing a collaborative partnership.
The success of the program relies on the collaboration of various teams, including Lalumwe’s medical team, a senior clinician from the partnering medical clinic, the District Health Administrator, and, if needed or desired, a local ultrasound technologist.
The program will utilize a Butterfly IQ ultrasound probe, generously donated by Lalumwe, paired with an iPhone or iPad for connectivity. Internet access will be facilitated through cellular, satellite, or alternative means, enabling the storage of ultrasound images/clips in the cloud and supporting Zoom video conferencing for ongoing educational purposes.
